$3 Million to Oklahoma Schools from The Cherokee Nation

Over 100 public schools in northeastern Oklahoma will receive more than $3 million from The Cherokee Nation in 2009. The donation will come from revenue generated by tribal car tag sales. As principal Chief Chad Smith said at a news conference announcing the gift, “Innovative educational programs continue to be a priority as we plan for our future. This $3 million will help not only the 21,000 Cherokee students in these schools but all the other students and staff, as well.” According to coverage in Tulsa World, The Cherokee Nation has donated more than $16 million to schools in northeastern Oklahoma since 2002. Notably, the donation is unrestricted and may be spent by the schools on areas where they see a need.

$250,000 to Jarvis Christian College from Anonymous Donor

Jarvis Christian College has received $250,000 from an anonymous member of the Northway Christian Church.  The contribution, announced by Jarvis in January, will be used to endow a scholarship for a Northway student to attend the school.  Jarvis and Northway have a strong relationship, according to the Longview News-Journal, with the church supporting the college as one of its mission outreach programs.

$500,000 to Texas Tech from Michael and Barbara McKenzie

The Texas Tech Alumni Association Merket Alumni Center campaign has received a $500,000 gift toward its $4 million expansion campaign from Michael (“Mickey”) and Barbara Esslinger McKenzie.  Mr. McKenzie, who is CEO and Chairman of the Board of Grocery Supply Company (GSC), graduated from Texas Tech in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in management.  Mrs. McKenzie graduated from the school in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree in history and currently serves as president of the alumni associations National Board of Directors.  According to the university, the new ballroom in the Center will be named in the family’s honor.

$5 Million to Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas from the Engelstad Family

The Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas will be receiving a contribution of $5 million from Kris Engelstad-McGarry on behalf of the Engelstad FamilyAccording to Fox 5 Vegas, $2.5 million will be used for reconstruction of the Boys and Girls Club on Dumont Street, $1 million will be create an endowment for building maintainence and $1.5 million will be dedicated to college scholarships for Boys and Girls Club youth.

$18 Million Gift to the University of Texas at Austin from W.A. “Tex” Moncrief

W.A. “Tex” Moncrief, President of Moncrief Oil Interests in Fort Worth, has given $18 million to the University of Texas at Austin to create a named Endowment in Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences.  The gift, which will be combined with an $18 million contribution from an anonymous donor to create the endowment, will allow the university’s Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) to support eight new Faculty Fellows, nine Grand Challenge Faculty Fellows and eight undergraduate interns.  In an announcement issued by the University of Texas, University President William Powers Jr. said the gift “will allow [the] university to become the leader in researching what we call the scientific ‘grand challenges’ facing the nation and the world today. These will involve using computational engineering and science to study such monumental challenges as cardiovascular engineering, water sustainability and weather.”  Mr. Moncrief is a 1942 graduate of The University of Texas and a former member of the University of Texas System Board of Regents.

$1.3 Million Sculpture Given to Arizona State University by Morton and Donna Fleischer

Spirit, a $1.3 million statue well-recognized by Scottsdale residents for its long-time prominent position outside the now closed Fleischer Museum, has been donated to the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University by entrepreneur Morton Fleischer and his wife, Donna, who is an ASU graduate.  “We believe an appropriate location for ‘Spirit’ is near the W. P. Carey School of Business since the statue artistically represents what American entrepreneurs and business people have been able to accomplish within America’s vibrant framework,” Mr. Fleischer explained to the ASU News.  Plaques with messages by Mr.Fleischer about America, freedom and achievement will be placed with the statue on its new site.
